MOD Demoscene Music: What Is It and how Did It Come About?
The Concept of Demos
Demoscene music evolved out of the concept of demos which originally
was a signature created by a person with knowledge in reverse
engineering, also known as software cracking. The purpose of the
signature was to crack the code of games in an effort to run the program
on computers of the 1980s without the use of the CD. This enabled the
software cracker to create as many visual effects and activity on the
computer screen as they could. The process was known as a “letter” or
“message” and later became known as “demos.”
Today, software crackers are known as demos writers who form groups that
consist of a coder, graphic artists, and musicians who work together to
create real time artwork. Although the concept was first introduced on
the old Apple II computers of the early 1980s, demo writers of today
have been able to advance the practices of demo writing with new
technologies such as 3D acceleration and other applications.
The Growth of Demoscene Music
Now that we have taken a look at the concept behind demos writing
let’s talk about what spurred the growth of demoscene music.
In the 1980s demos writers were highly competitive with one another and
the concept of demos was also known the Platform Wars. As demos writers
competed to see who could show off the most PC capabilities by taking
music from games and adding graphics, the competition eventually spurred
the growth of the demoscene music industry. Artists such as coders,
graphic artists, and musicians competed to see who could come up with
the most spectacular display.
By the 1990s, demoscene competitions began to become a major event and
were popping up all over the world in many different countries. With
advanced technology, demoscene has influenced the computer games
industry and multimedia entertainment and is used on a wide variety of
different platforms.
Demoscene Influence
Although
demoscene began through software cracker signatures, it has influenced
the future of the computer industry in a variety of ways:
§ Gaming Industry: The gaming industry has grown immensely and employs
some demoscene concepts in some of the applications. Gaming programmers
who are not original demosceners have integrated a lot of the demoscene
concepts into games. At the same token, original demosceners are
influencing and creating games that employ a demoscene group of coders,
graphic artists, and musicians.
§ Multimedia: Demoscene has had a direct influence on the computer
multimedia industry and the concept of combining graphics with music
into a video. Although demoscene creates the effects in an obscure
fashion, it has influenced the MTV industry and some of the video
streaming that is currently being created in the online environment
today.
§ Realtime Visualization: Realtime visualization has been a staple of
demoscene art since its inception and has had a major influence on the
real-time applications that we are familiar with in the present day.
Demoscene was originally used with DOS applications and with limited
capabilities. With the implementation of new computer operating systems
and the growing popularity of the Internet, the growth of demoscene has
been able to expand in capability, access international demoscene groups
as well as many archives that are related to demoscene production.
